1. Conjunctions

• Coordinating Conjunctions: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet
  • Example: I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.
• Subordinating Conjunctions: because, although, since, unless, while
  • Example: Although it was late, she decided to finish her work.

2. Pronouns

• Pronouns can refer back to previously mentioned nouns to avoid repetition.
• Example: Maria has a dog. It is very playful.

3. Lexical Cohesion

• This involves the use of synonyms, antonyms, or related words to create connections.
• Example: The car was fast, and its speed impressed everyone.

4. Referencing

• Demonstrative Pronouns: this, that, these, those
  • Example: This is the best book I’ve ever read.
• Definite Article: the
  • Example: I saw a movie last night. The movie was fantastic.

5. Transitions and Linking Words

• Words or phrases that show the relationship between ideas, like addition, contrast, or cause and effect.
• Addition: furthermore, moreover, in addition
  • Example: She loves to read; moreover, she enjoys writing.
• Contrast: however, on the other hand, nevertheless
  • Example: The weather was cold; however, we decided to go hiking.
• Cause and Effect: therefore, consequently, as a result
  • Example: It was raining; therefore, the game was postponed.

6. Ellipsis

• Omitting parts of a sentence because they are understood from the context.
• Example: I would like a coffee; she would like one, too. (The word "coffee" is omitted in the second clause.)

Importance of Cohesive Devices:

Using cohesive devices effectively can enhance the clarity and flow of writing, making it easier for readers to understand the relationships between ideas and follow the argument or narrative. They are essential for creating well-structured paragraphs and essays.
