Our
National Memorial
The National Memorial of
Bangladesh is a famous monument which is built in remembrance of the freedom
fighters who laid down their lives during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in
1971. It lies at Savar about 35 km north-west of the capital Dhaka and is one
of the greatest and most magnificent tourist charms in Bangladesh. The monument
is built with concrete but it signifies the nation’s respect for the martyrs of
the War of Liberation. [The National Memorial-paragraph] The monument complex
is expanded over an area of 34 hectares in a nice smooth environment. The main
structure of the monument is truly a series of seven towers that rise by stages
to a height of 150 feet. Seven towers remind us of our seven ‘Bir Shreshthos’
of the liberation war. Other structures and sidewalks are made of red bricks
which reminds us of the blood of the 3 million martyrs who sacrificed their
blood only for the freedom of their dear motherland. Several graves of the
martyred freedom fighters and a pool of water are located in front of the
monument. The whole complex also includes a number of other structures with a
museum. The monument was designed by Syed Mainul Hossain and was inaugurated on
the 16th December 1982. Every year, on Independence Day (26 March) and the
Victory Day (16 December), people of all walks of life go to the National
Memorial to show reverence to the martyrs offering floral wreaths. Every day
lots of people from home and abroad visit this monument which is the testimony
of freedom at the cost of a river of blood.
Social
Network Services
Social network services
are one of the most popular online features nowadays. Most people, who are not
even compatible with the internet, somehow manage to use social network
services to keep up with the growing trend. A social network is basically a
platform where people can build social relations based on similar interests,
activities and even real-life events. Among all other social networks, Facebook
is seen to be growing at the fastest rate and hence is the most popular. Before
Facebook, another social network ‘Hi5’ dominated the field of social network
services. Facebook eventually beat Hi5 and took its place with a higher number
of users. Apart from facebook, twitter, google plus, Instagram are some of the
other popular social networks. Social networking sites allow people to have
free accounts with which they can connect with people from all parts of the
world. There are facilities of privacy settings with which people can enjoy
these social networks and also eliminate stalkers and problematic people. The
accounts are free for regular people but people who use these social networks
for business purposes have to pay a charge to the owners of these networks.
Communication has become much easier with social network services. People can
stay connected with their loved ones no matter what the distance is. Photo
Sharing and video sharing features make it easier for people to know what their
close and distant ones are doing. Some of these networks, such as facebook,
allow chatting and video calling which makes communication even better. As long
as people know the limit of using social network services, they pose no harm to
society.
A Good Citizen
A good citizen is a person who abides by the rules of his
society and country, and fulfills his responsibilities as a citizen. A good
citizen is first and foremost a good person. He wants peace for all and never
harms others. He doesn’t quarrel with others, but always tries to resolve the
conflicts of others. A good citizen wishes good for his country and loves it.
If he is eligible to pay taxes, he pays it regularly, and works as hard as he
can for the development of the country. He himself doesn’t waste state
resources and doesn’t allow others to do so. A good citizen never thinks of
earning in a dishonest way. He makes his living honestly. He tries his best to
remove bribery and corruption from the society. To build a better society, he
tries to help law enforcement agencies prevent drug addiction. After all, a
good citizen is a patriot, he never does anything that degrades the dignity of
his country. Thus a good citizen is the main asset of a country. Good citizens
are very important in building a developed and peaceful society. Therefore, we
should all strive to be good citizens.
The Padma Bridge
The longest bridge in Bangladesh is the Padma Multipurpose Bridge.
This dream Padma Bridge is the biggest project implemented by Bangladesh
without any foreign aid. It is the largest project in the country and will be
the longest bridge in the country after construction. The bridge is being
constructed with concrete and steel. The length of the main bridge is 6.15 km
and the width is 16.10 m. The bridge connecting Mawa in Munshiganj district to
Jajira in Shariatpur district has two layers. It has a four-lane road at the
top and a railway at the bottom. The Padma Bridge will be used for rail, gas,
power lines and fiber optic cable expansion in the future. The complete design
of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge was formed by a team of international and
national consultants led by ECOM. A company called China Major Bridge, a subsidiary
of China Railway Group Limited, has been contracted to build the bridge.
Construction began on December 6, 2014, and by November 2020, 92% of the bridge
was completed. According to China Major Bridge Engineering Company, the
contractor constructing the Padma Bridge, the Padma Bridge will be ready for
traffic by April 2022. The project will directly benefit more than 30 million
people (44,000 sq km which is 29% of the total area of Bangladesh). Completion
of this bridge at a cost of over Tk 30,000 crore will make a significant
contribution to the social, economic and industrial development of the southern
part of Bangladesh. The bridge will play an important role in regional
connectivity between Asia and Southeast Asia. The Padma Bridge, the dream of
the people of Bangladesh, is on the way to be realized today. Although the
World Bank and donors withdrew due to allegations of corruption, the Bangladesh
government did not back down. The government decided to build the bridge with
its own funds and the work is progressing accordingly. Work on the Padma Bridge
is progressing at a normal pace. Everyone concerned is hoping that the
construction work of the bridge will be completed within the stipulated time.
